In recognition of their strong commitment and philanthropic leadership to numerous causes in the Greater Cincinnati community, including Drake Center, Jack and Karen Cassidy have been named recipients of the 2010 Diamond Award. Also being honored are Johan and Susan deRoos, recipients of the 2010 Spirit of Drake Award. Johan, a former Drake patient, and his wife, Susan, have been active advocates of Drake since Johan's stroke in 2006. Drake Center will honor its volunteers to celebrate National Volunteer Week at a special luncheon on April 22. This year's theme is "Volunteers Build a Better World."
Among those being honored are four high school friends from the Drake Auxiliary who rallied around one of the women when her 18-year-old son suffered a catastrophic brain injury in an accident while playing basketball. David spent 20 years at Drake, confined to a wheelchair, unable even to speak. read more . . .

Reba George Dysart has been named Executive Director of The Drake Foundation. She will also oversee volunteers, the auxiliary, and chaplaincy at Drake Center.
Dysart comes to Drake after serving, since 2006, as Executive Director of the Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to women?s breast health and child development through the game of chess. Through collaboration, strategic innovation, volunteer mobilization, and community engagement, she brought over two million dollars in direct fundraising support to the Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund. read more . . .

On April 15, 2010, the Drake Auxiliary will present its 22nd annual fashion show with an all-new high energy, high fashion, rock-the-runway show featuring some of Cincinnati's trendiest boutiques.
Drake Center intern, Alex Morton-Green from Morgan State University in Baltimore is the idea person behind "Fashion for All Ages" drawing from experience she gained while working in fashion design during college. Alex has been on the production side of high energy shows in addition to modeling for up and coming fashion designers. read more . . .

Long-time Drake Center resident, Gayle Anderson, has always loved the arts and opera. She learned about an art appreciation program for the disabled called Visionaries and Voices. Gayle was matched with V&V coordinator, Christine Mayhew, who, for about a year has visited weekly helping Gayle learn creative expression through her love of the arts.

Drake Center has received the 2009 Platinum Award for best community relations campaign from HealthLeaders Media for its 9/11 event honoring first responders.
On September 11, 2008 Drake held a community event to memorialize lives lost on 911, and to honor all first responders. More than 22 local agencies participated in the event to showcase their equipment and "learning stations" including: bomb squad, SWAT team, water rescue, mounted patrol, smoke house, Air Care, canine units, fire trucks and more. There was also a memorial march, ceremony, and free concert by the Ohio Military Band. read more . . .

Anne Blevins, BSN, RN, WCC, WOCN, Wound Care Clinical Coordinator at Drake Center, standing on right, was named 2009 Outstanding Researcher in Wound Care by the National Alliance of Wound Care (NAWC) at its annual meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, September 10-12. NAWC is a multi-disciplinary professional organization for wound care certification and membership offering credentialing to nurses, therapists, physicians and their assistants. read more . . .

August 11, Nineteen-year-old Amber Gray, a forward on the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team, went home from Drake Center.
Gray underwent elective surgery on July 2 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville to repair her rotator cuff. Post-surgery complications led to the discovery of an unrelated brain aneurysm that began to hemorrhage, causing a stroke. She was flown to University Hospital in Cincinnati where renowned neurosurgeon Mario Zuccarello, M.D., of the Mayfield Clinic and the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute performed a 12 ½ hour surgical procedure to clip the aneurysm. read more . . .

Drake Honored its "extraordinary" volunteers during National Volunteer Week (April 19 through 25) at a special luncheon on April 21. This year's theme is "Everyday People, Extraordinary Contributions." Among those honored are five volunteers who have made extraordinary contributions to Drake throughout the past years were:
- Bobbie Tugwell, a seventy-five-year-old veteran volunteer who was 14 years old when she first volunteered and has now logged more than 10,000 volunteer hours
- Volunteers of the Year Ausuma Balinkin and Barb Davis are being honored as Volunteers of the Year. Ausuma has been volunteering for 17 years by knitting clothing to sell in the gift shop. This year alone she has put in more than 300 hours, and her clothing has brought in more than a $1,000 profit for patient programs. Barb uses her special talents by volunteering at Bridgeway Pointe, the assisted-living facility at Drake. Since 2007 Barb has led "Fancy Fingers," a quilting and sewing group, for residents. Their quilts have been donated to Children's Hospital Medical Center, and their creations have been exhibited at Loveland Library Quilt Show.
- Junior volunteers Kyrie and Kyra Watkins are eighth-grade students at Hartwell School who have regularly volunteered in the gift shop since 2008, and have also provided clerical work in the Public Relations & Marketing Department. Both girls are being inducted into the Junior Volunteer Hall of Fame.

Bette Sherman has been a passionate collector of historic women's fashion and vintage beauty products for nearly 30 years. Her research and beauty collection offer a glimpse into the boudoir and dressing table of women of the past. On February 6, Drake Center employees showed their support of the American Heart Association's "Go Red For Women," movement to fight heart disease and stroke. Drake employees donated $5 to AHA to wear jeans and a red top to work. More than 50 health consicious employees participated.

Nexstim, Drake Center to study Navigated Brain Stimulation in stroke recovery diagnosis and rehabilitation. Nexstim Oy, a medical device company developing a revolutionary brain diagnostics and therapy technology, and Drake Center, in association with the University of Cincinnati, today announced they had signed an agreement to study the benefits of using Navigated Brain Stimulation (NBS) in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of a patient's recovery following stroke.
The Nexstim NBS device will initially be used in a Drake-sponsored study to determine how the brain's potential to transmit high quality signals to a stroke patient's muscles might be used to better assess prognosis and the success of physiotherapy during post-stroke rehabilitation. read more . . .

Not everyone can appear on the hit TV series The Biggest Loser, so Drake Center employees decided to create their own program in an effort to live healthier lifestyles. Tomorrow at noon, the much anticipated "Biggest Loser" (for the current session) will be announced and awarded $400 cash.
The 12-week program costs each employee $25, and all money collected is awarded to a first and second place "loser" at the end of each session. On average about 20 Drake employees participate in each series. The group holds weekly meetings to support each other, share recipes and other success tips. read more . . .

Drake Center clinicians today announced they have launched a groundbreaking, interdisciplinary service designed to help stroke survivors achieve the fullest possible recovery, regardless of whether their stroke occurred days or years in the past.
The new Stroke Recovery Center at Drake builds on Drake's long-standing strengths in the area of neurorehabilitation, combined with the University of Cincinnati's world-renowned leadership in stroke research and treatment through the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Team. The Stroke Recovery Center includes a full continuum of post-stroke recovery care, including inpatient and outpatient treatment, research and consultation. Today on Fountain Square the Human Relations Commission of Greater Cincinnati honored Drake Center with its Excellence Award for advancing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This award was given to raise awareness of National Disability Employment Month.

The American Heart Association awarded Drake Center with its Fit-Friendly Company Gold Award for 2008. Drake received the award for recognizing the importance of a healthy workplace for employees and for taking the important steps necessary to create a culture of physical activity for its workforce. "Promoting a wellness culture by providing support to employees and implementing physical, nutritional, and cultural changs are extraordinary efforts, and we commend you and your employees," said M. Drake Center commemorates 9/11--On Sept. 11, 4-8 p.m., Drake Center held a memorial event to commemorate the community's first responders and honor those who lost heir lives in the line of duty on that fateful day seven years ago. Drake Center feels a special closeness to first responders, they are the first medically trained professionals to arrive on an accident scene and play a vital role in helping to save the lives of those patients who come to Drake. "This event represents only a fraction of the gratitude we feel toward first responders," said Alan Jones, Director of of Human Resources and Public Safety, Drake Center.

Nigerian Senator Visits Drake Center: Purpose To Establish Mentor Hospitals That Will Improve Health Care in Nigeria--Drake Center is one of three stops in a tour of the United States by Nigeria Senator Christina Anyanwu. The purpose of the senator's visit is to establish partnerships with U.S. hospitals in the hope that they will mentor Nigerian hospitals to improve health care in that country.

Paul Newman, Ph.D., A.B.P.P.-C.N., Director of Medical Psychology and Neuropsychology at Drake Center has received board certification in Clinical Neuropsychology from the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABCN). Dr. Newman joins the ranks of only 607 neuropsychologists nationwide, and only one other adult neuropsychologist in Cincinnati to achieve this specialty certification. read more . . .

Drake Center Presents "Sounds of Summer," Concert Made Possible by Former Patient--On Thursday, July 24, Darke Center presented "Sounds of Summer," one in a series of concerts presented through the generosity of Mrs. Marjorie Motch. Mrs. Motch, a long-time community activitist and resident of Cincinnati, is a former patient of Drake.

Drake Center hosted representatives from Wal-Mart for a demonstration of the STAR Computerized Driver Simulation Equipment that helps therapists assess cognitive and physical skills of patients, and determine if they possess the abilities needed to once again operate a vehicle. The equipment was made possible by a generous donation from the Wal-Mart Foundation to the Drake Foundation in 2007, and has helped patients regain their independence after enduring an injury. "Driving is a real mark of independence," said Karen Craven, occupational therapist for Drake Center. Craven and other therapists have been helping patients relearn the skills needed to drive, giving them the opportunity for a more independent lifestyle. read more . . .
