Drake Center: Specialized Medical & Rehabilitative Care

Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Brain injury rehabilitation treats patients with a broad range of diagnoses, including brain injury due to trauma, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, brain tumors, infections, hypoxia, stroke (with significant cognitive deficits), and many other conditions. Persons recovering from these conditions require specialized, comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services to achieve their maximum potential.

Screening of potential patients

Appropriate referrals include adults, usually 16 and older, with complications from brain injuries that include cognitive (thinking) deficits, walking difficulty, spasticity, and behavioral problems.

Specialized approaches

Cognitive (thinking) deficits vary widely depending on the location and severity of injury. The Drake Center team has extensive expertise in assessment, understanding, and treatment of cognitive deficits, including agitation.

Drake Center team members also have special interest and experience in sensorimotor stimulation — the term used to describe the treatment of more severe brain injuries, characterized by lack of alertness. This treatment consists of four key components:

  • High-quality medical and nursing care to stabilize medical problems and prevent additional complications.
  • Aggressive prevention and management of complications, such as spasticity, contractures, and skin breakdown.
  • Sensorimotor regulation, providing sensory stimuli and documenting responses.
  • Careful use of medications to enhance recovery and minimize side effects.

Family involvement is encouraged and support services are provided.
