Drake Center: Specialized Medical & Rehabilitative Care

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Persons recovering from orthopedic injuries, ranging from multiple trauma to joint replacements and amputations, require specialized, comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services to achieve their maximum potential. Drake Center programs are carefully designed and individualized to help each patient and family progress through the recovery process, from relearning basic life skills to reclaiming their lives.

Screening of potential patients

Appropriate referrals should be adults, usually 16 and older. Potential inpatients and families are usually referred to the Drake Admitting department for initial evaluation, available seven days a week by a highly trained assessment nurse team. Outpatient evaluations are usually initiated through the outpatient physician program.

Specialized approaches

Beyond the range of traditional rehabilitation programs, Drake Center’s orthopedic team provides specialized services that contribute to both successful recovery and future prevention:

  • Care and preventive education programs teach patients, prior to discharge, how to take responsibility for their individual care. Topics include proper wound care, orthopedic precautions, medication instructions, and nutrition.
  • Specially trained therapists for patients with amputations provide training in walking, both with and without prosthetic devices. The patient, therapist, prosthetist, and physician work together closely in prescribing and fine-tuning the artificial limb.
  • Short-stay care for patients with joint replacements helps them make the transition from hospital to home.
  • Warm-water aquatic therapy is available, when appropriate, to help improve patients' functional ability for daily living.
  • Family involvement is encouraged and support services are provided.
