Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation
Persons with spinal cord injuries require specialized, comprehensive inpatient
and outpatient rehabilitation programs to achieve maximum potential.
Screening of potential patients
Appropriate referrals include adults, usually 16 and older, who have had recent
spinal cord injuries, as well as those with earlier spinal cord injuries who
have shown recent change in functional status with the capacity for improvement.
Specialized approaches
- Care and preventive education programs teach patients and families, prior to
discharge, how to take responsibility for care — for example, our skin care education
group.
- Warm-water aquatic therapy is available to help improve patients' functional
ability for daily living.
- Body-weight support system therapy (with the Lite Gait system) is available
for walking training, as appropriate.
- Functional electrical stimulus (FES) bicycle training is available to
increase patients' leg strength and endurance.
- Academic and vocational reentry involves helping patients return to school
or work. Drake Center team members will often complete an on-site evaluation,
then make recommendation to the employer or school.
- Family involvement is encouraged and support services are provided.
