Drake Center: Specialized Medical & Rehabilitative Care

Stroke Rehabilitation

We provide the region’s most advanced stroke recovery treatment and research. From complex medical care for inpatients to aggressive outpatient therapies, we help patients regain function and reach their maximum potential, sometimes years after they’ve been told there is no hope.

We are the only specialty hospital in the region with in-house clinical rehabilitation research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Stroke Association.

Complete care

Drake has several levels of services to care for stroke patients, depending on the severity of their condition:

Care and preventive education programs teach patients, prior to discharge, how to take responsibility for care. Throughout the patient’s recovery, family involvement is encouraged and support services are provided.

Stroke Recovery Center: The best in research and recovery

This year, we’re expanding our stroke recovery services. In July we are launching our new Stroke Recovery Center. In what may be a nationwide first, we’re partnering a neurologist, physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, and a physical therapist to help stroke patients make the fullest possible recovery after a stroke. We will also evaluate each patient to determine if they may be eligible to participate in any stroke recovery research programs at Drake Center. This interdisciplinary approach helps to ensure patients get every opportunity to reach their maximum potential.

Our active, on-site research program focused on stroke is the only one like it in the region. We currently have 10 research programs focused on stroke rehabilitation. By bringing the latest in stroke recovery research to outpatients and inpatients, we’ve helped participants regain function and skills years after a stroke.

We also host a stroke support group to help patients and others deal with the effects of stroke.

Screening of potential patients

Appropriate referrals include adults (18 and older) who are survivors of acute strokes, and those who’ve experienced earlier strokes and have functional needs and potential for improvement.
