Spasticity & Mobility Management
Persons with spasticity experience uncontrolled muscle contractions, spasms, and
pain. This condition can be an issue at every stage of neurological injury and
recovery.
When spasticity interferes with such activities as hygiene and caregiving,
precision motor control, brace wear and fit, transfer and walking ability,
continence, pain control, and appearance, the individual should consider an
evaluation by a Drake Center neurological rehabilitation team. Even those with
injuries several years old may improve their functioning and relieve pain with
appropriate treatment.

Drake Center’s spasticity and mobility management team brings a wealth of
expertise and experience to spasticity issues. Knowledgeable about innovative
approaches and treatments, they work to improve the functioning of persons with
mobility problems:
- Board-certified physiatry and rehabilitation neurology physicians, with
experience in the care of acute and chronic neurological conditions, evaluate
patients and suggest a variety of treatment options.
- Physical therapy professionals, with expertise in treating the lower
extremities, provide a number of options for managing spasticity. These include
therapeutic exercise, casting, and bracing. When appropriate, they can also
provide patients with home-based exercise programs.
- Occupational therapy professionals have extensive experience in the
rehabilitation of arms and hands, with particular emphasis on painful hemiplegic
shoulders, wrist and finger positioning, and restoration of arm and hand

revise braces and footplates that meet individuals’ needs.
