The Drake Foundation Presents: Bob and Lee Woodruff

The Drake Foundation will host ABC news anchor Bob Woodruff and his wife Lee for a traumatic brain injury symposium on April 1, 2008. The event, which focuses on Bob’s recovery from a traumatic brain injury and its impact on his family, is aimed at building awareness and support for Drake Center’s traumatic brain injury patients and families and honoring wounded military heroes.

In January 2006, ABC News Anchor/Reporter Bob Woodruff became an American news anchor wounded in a war zone when he sustained a life-threatening traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a roadside bomb in Iraq.  Bob and his wife Lee, author, freelance writer, and contributing editor at ABC's Good Morning America, chronicled their family’s journey to recovery in the best-selling memoir In An Instant: A Family’s Journey of Love and Healing. The Woodruffs have since dedicated themselves to putting a face on the serious issue of TBI, especially among America’s injured military personnel. They have formed The Bob Woodruff Family Fund to support this cause.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate 1.4 million Americans sustain a TBI each year. Drake Center is the region’s leader in the treatment and recovery of traumatic brain injury patients. Drake Center treats more than 110 inpatient traumatic brain injury patients each year and has achieved outstanding patient outcomes typically exceeding national benchmarks.

"Drake helps patients reclaim their health, restore their hope and rebuild their lives,” said Craig Rice, president of The Drake Foundation. “We help to restore traumatic brain injury patients to their highest possible level of functioning and independence.

Bob and Lee Woodruff are inspiring examples of a family who has gone through these struggles, while in the national spotlight, and overcome the obstacles in their way to achieve a successful recovery. This symposium will encourage the patients and families living with traumatic brain injuries and help us all to understand the sacrifices being made on our behalf by America’s military heroes.”
